This Thursday night is another great RAW Natural Born Artist event at the Ivy downtown. The events are every last Thursday of the month, and I happened to attend the latest one to see what all the hype was about.
A lot of fancy sounding events roll through town, try to get your money, and then roll right out. You want to play a show for an event where people are actual listening? Or better yet, that even HAS people? I gotta say, this might be one of the best seasonal events that really gets attendance.
There is something for everyone: art, fashion, photography, entertainment... We had a really good time perusing all the cool stuff. I bought some earrings from Moonlit Jewelry, met a guy who custom paints vans, and looked at the works of many rad artists.
There's a good indie vibe going on with well dressed people, not just your typical skanky short skirt you might find on the corner of 6th ave. The peeps at RAW look classy, but they're cool kids too. I would have to say my only complaint would be the glass of wine and the jack and coke that totaled 27 dollars. But here's the loophole... Head back upstairs and get a glass of wine from their wine bar. A full glass runs as low as 7 bucks for a delicious malbec, and you can bring it back downstairs. Sorry Ivy, but starving artists don't generally pay that much for a drink.
This week's event is featuring The Filthy Violets again... in a city with as much talent as San Diego, I don't think RAW needs to be bringing back the same artists, but they need help spreading the word about their mission, "RAW's mission is to provide up-and-coming artists of all creative realms with the tools, resources and exposure needed to inspire and cultivate creativity so that they might be seen, heard and loved." Submit your music here, and let's spread the local love! Shows are going on through October of 2011.
Once you've played at one RAW showcase, you can play at any of them that you want! Or something like that. Just contact them for more details and check out RAW Incite this Thursday if you want to see what it's all about.
